EXCERPTS FROM FSC CERTIFICATION ASSESSMENT REPORT “Lyme Northern Forest Fund’s (LNFF’s) partnership with the state through the conservation easement, road agreement, and recreation management agreement is a model of sustainable forest management for private industry and investment corporations throughout the United States. LNFF has demonstrated how the philosophies, principles, and practices of a working forest can be balanced with environmental stewardship and social awareness and responsibility.” “Lyme Northern Forest Fund has developed an exemplary management plan (where the “management plan” is defined as a set of documents including the interim and initial stewardship plans, the conservation easement, the road management agreement, and the public access and recreational use management plan) which was complete, as defined by FSC certification standards, at the time of certification assessment.” “Maps (at all scales) and the mapping system are of the highest quality and are a model for other organizations.” “While officially only in operation for one year, Lyme Northern Forest Fund has practiced forestry through the Connecticut Lakes Timber Company since March 2002. Timber harvest activities and associated silvicultural interventions have been consistently high over that period. Advanced regeneration is protected in the forest, particularly with the careful use of feller-buncher machinery. Quality crop trees are retained and protected in partially cut stands. All timber harvests are directed to upgrade forest quality in terms of species composition and the capacity to produce high quality sawtimber.” Source: SmartWood
