Amherst Woodlands This 5,000 acre parcel in Amherst, Maine was purchased by the Lyme Forest Fund in October 2006. The property is located approximately 20 minutes east of Bangor, ME on Route 9. The Amherst Woodlands forest is typical for the region - red spruce and white pine with average quality northern hardwoods dominated by sugar maple, red maple, beech and birch. There are four remote ponds with approximately 1,800 surrounding acres that have been identified by the Forest Society of Maine (FSM), The Nature Conservancy, and the state as warranting special protection as an ecological reserve. Amherst Woodlands was brought to Lyme’s attention by FSM. As part of the purchase, FSM obtained a three-year option to buy the property. Lyme has agreed not to harvest in the proposed ecological reserve during the term of the option.
